How we engage

Five engagement shapes, one delivery team.

We don't pretend that every problem fits a single engagement model. Below are the shapes we most often work in — and how we price them.

Discovery Sprint

1–3 weeks · fixed fee

Best for: When the problem is real but the shape of the solution isn't clear yet.

A focused engagement to produce an architecture, technical plan, risk register, and a credible estimate you can act on — with us or with anyone else. Most builds start here.

Typical deliverables

  • Architecture & data-flow diagrams
  • Compliance/control mapping (where relevant)
  • Phased build plan with estimate
  • Risk register and key decisions log

Fixed-Scope Build

6–20+ weeks · fixed-scope phases

Best for: When the scope is well-defined and you want a delivery partner who owns the outcome.

End-to-end design and delivery of a custom application, AI system, data platform, or compliance workflow. Two-week increments with working software at the end of each.

Typical deliverables

  • Production-ready system
  • Test, security, and (if relevant) AI evaluation coverage
  • Operational runbook + handoff
  • Optional ongoing support phase

Embedded Engineering

Monthly · time-and-materials with weekly cap

Best for: When your team needs senior engineering/architecture firepower without a permanent hire.

One or more senior engineers/architects embed with your existing team. We work inside your tooling, your standards, and your ceremonies — augmenting capacity instead of building a parallel track.

Typical deliverables

  • Sprint-level contribution into your backlog
  • Architecture and code review
  • Mentorship and pattern lifting
  • Clean exit ramp when no longer needed

Fractional Architecture / AI Advisory

Monthly retainer · capped hours

Best for: When you need senior decision-support but not full-time leadership.

A senior architect or AI lead available on a recurring basis — for design reviews, vendor selection, compliance-architecture questions, AI strategy, and roadmap calls. Bring us in for the decisions that matter.

Typical deliverables

  • Recurring working sessions
  • Async review of designs/PRs/RFCs
  • Written recommendations + decision records
  • Vendor and tooling guidance

Operate & Support

Monthly retainer

Best for: When a system we built (or know well) needs ongoing care.

Monitoring, maintenance, incident response, small enhancements, and security/compliance hygiene for production systems. Scoped to your operational reality, not a generic SLA template.

Typical deliverables

  • Defined response windows
  • Monthly maintenance + small enhancements
  • Quarterly architecture review
  • Security and compliance hygiene

How we price

No surprise invoices. No open-ended retainers that drift.

We don't publish a public rate card — engagement shape, seniority mix, and compliance scope move the number too much for that to be useful. We do commit to clarity before the work starts.

  • Fixed-fee discovery

Discovery sprints are always fixed fee with a defined deliverable. You leave with an architecture and plan, not just a meeting recap.

  • Phased fixed-scope builds

Builds are broken into fixed-scope phases with clear acceptance criteria — not multi-month time-and-materials black boxes.

  • Capped time-and-materials

Embedded and advisory work runs T&M with a weekly hour cap and weekly transparency on burn.

  • Quarterly true-up on retainers

Retainers are reviewed quarterly so the scope matches what you actually need — up or down.

Not sure which model fits?

Most prospects don't know the answer on day one — and that's fine. A short call is usually enough to point at the right shape.
